Toyota Sets Sales Record on the Back of Hybrid Success (1350)

Toyota has set a new annual sales record for the Australian car industry, eclipsing the mark it set in 2008.

The brand sold 241,296 vehicles in 2024, breaking the previous record of 238,983. It is Toyota’s 22^nd consecutive year of market leadership.

Almost one in five new cars sold last year were Toyotas, with sales growing by 12.1 per cent in a relatively flat market.

The result was driven by the popularity of the brand’s hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), particularly RAV4, which has moved ahead of HiLux as the best-selling Toyota.

Toyota’s dealer network delivered 118,081 HEVs in 2024, taking the brand’s total hybrid sales past 500,000 since the introduction of the Prius in 2001.

Hybrid-electric vehicles made up close to half Toyota’s annual sales – a percentage that is likely to increase in 2025 after the company announced they would offer hybrid powertrains exclusively in its passenger vehicles and light-duty SUVs.

Other 2024 Toyota highlights are:

• Selling more than 200,000 vehicles for the 13^th year in a row.
• Achieving number one in the passenger, SUV and light-commercial segments.
• RAV4 was Australia’s best-selling SUV for the fifth consecutive year, notching 58,718 sales – close to double the 29,627 examples sold in 2023.
• Included in the RAV4 total were 55,902 hybrid-electric variants (up from 25,666 in 2023), making RAV4 the country’s best-selling hybrid vehicle.
• Toyota was the number one SUV brand overall, notching up a record combined total of 117,605 sales for the LandCruiser Wagon, LandCruiser Prado, Fortuner, Kluger, RAV4, Corolla Cross, bZ4X, C-HR and Yaris Cross.
• HiLux passed 50,000 sales for the fourth consecutive year. It has now been the top seller for each of the past 24 years in the NT, an unbroken run of 18 years in Queensland and 17 years in a row in WA.
• Corolla was Australia’s best-selling passenger car with 24,027 sales (19,986 in 2023).
• Eight Toyota vehicles led their individual segments: Corolla, Camry, RAV4, LandCruiser wagon, HiLux 4x2, HiAce Commuter bus, Coaster and HiAce van.
• Three Toyota vehicles sit among the top ten on the annual sales ladder – RAV4, HiLux and Corolla.

Toyota’s Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said

2024 had been an extraordinary year for the company due to the loyalty of the brand’s customers and the concerted efforts of employees, dealers and suppliers.

“With the support of our global production teams, we were able to substantially increase the supply of vehicles for Australian customers in 2024 and dramatically reduce wait times across most of our model line-up,” Mr Hanley said.

“While cost-of-living pressures started to have an impact across the industry in the latter part of last year, we are forecasting a resilient market in 2025, around 1.175 million vehicles.

“At Toyota, we are planning for another highly successful year with sales again above 220,000 vehicles, although the better alignment between supply and demand means we most likely will not match the record-breaking throughput of the past 12 months.

“As always, we are focused on offering vehicle choices to customers that meet their needs and wants – everything from an electrified vehicle for zipping about the city or a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive for towing heavy loads over long distances.

“Our forward orders remain very strong across the Toyota range, particularly for hybrid variants,” he said.
